Excerpt:  UW System is recognized throughout the world and is the envy of most states. It has achieved world prominence in its research reputation and has seen some of its highest rankings since the formation of the UW System.

It's worthwhile to consider current structures and future evolution of the UW System. The Legislature recently granted the UW System increased flexibilities to become more nimble and entrepreneurial — an excellent start. 

However, it is equally important to fully understand the history of public higher education in our state and the development of the UW System. The following texts, when read in combination, provide an excellent summary for those seeking to more fully understand the complexity and unique structure of one of the greatest pubic university systems in North America and the world:
