La Crosse's Lucy the Library Lady is Retiring
Lucy the Library Lady is retiring. (La Crosse Tribune, 4/9/2011)
Excerpt: Sherri Sinniger, La Crosse Public Libraries youth services program director, is the one who started calling her Lucy the Library Lady.
"She makes every moment magical for the kids," Sinniger said. "We're never going to be able to replace her."
Freeman was inspired after working in a Colorado library. She was bringing a group of kids to story time at the Kidsmobile, an old bookmobile complete with a stage.
"There were dragons, lions, all sorts of action and drama. Wonderful things," Freeman said.
She got a glimpse backstage, expecting to see 10 people.
"There was just a little old lady," Lucy said. "I said, ‘I want to be that little old lady.'"
Over the years, Freeman has learned a few tricks about how to entertain the toddlers.
"The puppet whistle is crucial," Freeman.
