Tacoma Public Library Closing Two Branches
Tacoma libraries will likely serve fewer. (Tacoma News Tribune, 1/16/2011)
Excerpt: But come Jan. 31, Yarngo and the other patrons who regularly gather here will have to find a new community hub, as Swan Creek and its cross-town twin, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library in Central Tacoma, will officially be closed to th.e public.
Casualties of a budget crunch, the two small branch libraries were reluctantly tapped for closure last month by the Tacoma Public Library Board of Trustees.
“We’re all unhappy to be at this point,” said Susan Odencrantz, the city’s library director. “Believe me, if we could avoid this, we would.”
But for years, cuts to the city’s library funding coupled with rising operational costs have taken a toll, she said, forcing library officials to look for creative ways to nip services here, tuck them there – all in hopes of staving off the inevitable.
