Appleton: 17.1 Square Miles Surrounded by Reality?
Link to November 10 Appleton Post-Crescent article, "Penny Bernard Schaber defeats Chris Hanson, keeping the 57th Assembly District under Democratic control".
Excerpt: For years, Republicans could count on winning the 57th Assembly District seat, regardless of how well or poorly the party fared in partisan elections every two years.
Those days may be over.
Not only did Democrats win the seat for the second time in a row last Tuesday, but they also won the district's vote for statewide offices.
That comes at a time when Republicans swamped the Democrats statewide, winning the governor's office, the state treasurer's and attorney general's offices and a U.S. Senate seat, as well as taking control of both houses of the state Legislature.
The 57th District includes most of Appleton and a small portion of Little Chute.
"Appleton has been trending to the left over the last few cycles, but especially in the downtown wards," said Arnold Shober, a professor of political science at Lawrence University. "It remains to be seen if the seat stays that way." [Emphasis added.]
