Missing: 1300 Picture Books

[What a crazy evening for library stories!]

Link to May 4 Kitsap Sun article, "1,300 Children’s Books Plucked for Good From Library Shelves".

Excerpt: A steady stream of children’s picture books have disappeared from the Kitsap Regional Library’s Port Orchard branch in recent months, prompting an investigation by police.

More than 1,300 children’s picture books worth an estimated $22,900 — roughly 20 percent of the branch’s collection — have been stolen from the library.

“It’s not just the library that lost these books,” Port Orchard library branch manager Kathleen Wilson said Tuesday. “It’s every child in the community.”

Wilson said the library’s circulation numbers were up about 8 percent in January and February, leading the staff to believe that the barren shelves were simply the result of increased deman
