Mayor Barrett Urges Milwaukee Business Community to Support MPL's Plan for 21st Century Libraries

ExcerptThe branch system, largely built during the 1960s, now requires significant capital investment. Instead, these funds would be invested in new energy-efficient buildings specifically designed for technology-rich services. The plan also illustrates an understanding of the economic realities facing the city of Milwaukee and addresses a 10-year decline in hours and collection development. Given various fiscal pressures, business as usual is not feasible.

While Milwaukee’s Central Library and its vast business resources, special research collections, and inspiring children’s room is an important and vital asset to our city, Milwaukee still needs a strong branch system serving all of our neighborhoods.
