Charlotte Mecklenburg Library System Rethinks Closings

Excerpt:     After days of public outcry over the planned closing of 12 library branches, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system is rethinking its approach to recouping $2 million in lost county money.

Director of Libraries Charles Brown said today that senior staff are reconsidering all options, including system wide salary and benefit cuts.

The results of their study will be presented to the Library Board of Trustees at a special meeting Wednesday, which is the deadline set to find the money or commit to the closings.

“We’re looking at alternatives to see what steps can be worked on to avoid closings, such as having fairly significant service reductions instead,” said Brown.
