From the Madison Public Library's clippings file: Remembering the hot-rodders of East Wash (1980-1999)

"409" is the B side of "Surfin' Safari".  The A side spent 17 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in the late summer and fall of 1962, peaking at #14.  The B side spent a single week on the at #76, for the week ending 10/13/1962.  Very odd, because both songs received plenty of airplay at the time.  (Yes, Retiring Guy was there.)

Why this song was never a huge hit, I'll never know.
