The Mediterranean Revival Gill-Joyce Funeral Parlor building was designed by Madison architect Ferdinand Kronenberg, and built in 1929. The Joyce Funeral Home was founded in 1929. During the 1930s, the storefront at 542 housed the Pfister Flower Shop. This building has one of the finest and most intact historic storefronts in the city.

Rowan County, Kentucky: Where intransigence due to religious beliefs makes Kim Davis unfit for her job

Kentucky Clerk Defies Court on Marriage Licenses for Gay Couples. (The New York Times, 8/13/2015)
Kim Davis, the clerk in Rowan County, who says her Christian faith bars her from authorizing same-sex marriages, has refused to issue any licenses, either to same-sex or heterosexual couples after the historic ruling in June in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges. She has ignored a direct order from Gov. Steven L. Beshear that she do so.

Unlike numerous other eastern Kentucky counties, Rowan County's population is currently at its peak.

Barack Obama received a higher percentage of the vote in Rowan County (45%) than he did statewide (38%) in the 2012 Presidential election.

Headline News: A Tale of Two Consumers

Some people aren't all that interested in acquiring more stuff.

Analysts say a wider shift is afoot in the mind of the American consumer, spurred by the popularity of a growing body of scientific studies that appear to show that experiences, not objects, bring the most happiness.

On the other hand, some people get downright giddy over acquiring more stuff, or objects, if you will.

Carly Fiorina’s misleading claims about her business record. (Washington Post, 5/8/2015)
Fiorina is running for president in part on her record in the business world, as a former executive at AT&T, Lucent and Hewlett-Packard. On the surface, that might seem like a hard sell, given that she was fired as chief executive of HP less than six years after she took the helm in mid-1999. “Carly Fiorina’s time at the top of HP was a disaster” is the subhead for a Bloomberg article that recently appeared in The Chicago Tribune.

The Carly Fiorina Leadership File.  (Bloomberg View, 5/5/2015)
To cut to the chase: Fiorina was fired from HP because she did a bad job. She also hasn’t held a major corporate position since she was pushed out of the company in 2005.
