Around Town Middleton: Lustron home

Proposed demolition puts renewed focus on all-metal Lustron homes. (Wisconsin State Journal, 8/27/2019)
The city’s Plan Commission on Monday is being asked to approve a demolition permit for one of the only about 2,680 Lustron homes ever built during the company’s four-year existence in the late 1940s. It’s also one of approximately 80 left in Wisconsin, and one of 16 listed as still standing in Madison, almost all of them on the Near West Side.
Lustrons are made of porcelain-enameled steel panels that were shipped to home sites and bolted together, erector-set style, on concrete slabs. Amid the post-World War II housing crunch, the basic one-story, two- or three-bedroom homes were seen as a way to house returning veterans and their families quickly and cheaply.
