Population loss in rural Kansas: Rush County

La Crosse is the county seat of Rush County.

Population loss by degrees:  80-89%70-79%, 60-69%, 50-59%.


Percentage of population 25 and older with a bachelor's degree:
  • 23.1% - Rush County
  • 32.3% - Kansas
  • 30.9% - U.S.
Percentage of population 65 and older:
  • 24.9% - Rush County
  • 15.4% - Kansas
  • 15.6% - U.S.

The last time Rush County voted for a Democratic candidate for president was in 1976, when Jimmy Carter beat Gerald Ford by 7.4 percentage points.  In 1964, LBJ beat Barry Goldwater by 23.4 percentage points. George Wallace received 8.8% of the vote in 1968.

Most Kansas ghost towns are no more than foundations, weathered headstones or tilled-up farmland that has wiped away traces of existence. Some are only memories visible in black-and-white photographs. 
Yet when the few buildings that still stand at Nekoma finally blow over, a vestige of the town’s past will live on at the Rush County Historical Society. 
The wood-frame Nekoma State Bank - once the last operating wood-frame bank in Kansas - has been restored, giving folks a glimpse of what life was like in a prairie town, said Brad Penka.
