The project began more than two years ago by identifying communities that were succeeding in maintaining and/or gaining adults aged 20 to 39. Although statistics are abundant for counties, the researchers looked at communities. “People don’t move to counties, people move to communities,” Stoecker says. “If we’re going to answer the questions, the data had to be at the community level.”

"White Room" by Cream debuts as a national breakout on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending October 5, 1968

But it stalled at #6, where it remained for 3 of its 5 weeks in the top 10.  Other observations:  The Four Top and Neil Diamond continue their slumps.  What does Elvets Rednow spell backwards?

Once upon a time, national breakout status was awarded to a single that debuted at #70 or higher on the Hot 100.  "White Room debuted at #58 but didn't reach the top 10 until week 5.

Bice: Mayor Barrett nominee for Fire and Police Commission disparages cops in email.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 10/4/2018)

I share this story because, while reading it, I was reminded of a series of conversations I had with Oshkosh friends in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  One member of this close-knit group had an older brother who was a member of the Milwaukee Police Department, and he rarely had anything good to say about the department's aggressive approach to policing and his brother's enthusiastic embrace of it.

That measure, approved just a month after the massacre at a high school in Parkland, Florida, came amid renewed debate about the 1996 Dickey Amendment, which bars the CDC from “advocating or promoting gun control.” The provision doesn’t explicitly prohibit gun violence research, but it has effectively starved it of federal funding.

The carillon of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Harlem

The Bells of St. Martin’s Fall Silent as Churches in Harlem Struggle.  (Theh New York Times, 9/30/2018)
The bells were last played in July, and then only briefly during an inspection by a carillon expert. The last time they were heard regularly was in 2013 because the carillon has been “deemed structurally unsound,” said Malcolm J. Merriweather, a member of the congregation. He is also a conductor and an assistant professor of music at Brooklyn College.
