Climate change as a matter of fact: Rising seas threaten Scottish heritage

Saving Scotland’s Heritage From the Rising Seas.  (The New York Times, 9/25/2018
More than 3,000 archaeological sites — among them standing stone circles, Norse halls and a Neolithic tomb graffitied by Vikings — have endured for millenniums, scattered across the roughly 70 islands that make up the Orkney archipelago.
At Skara Brae, one of Europe’s best-preserved Stone Age villages, kitchens built around 3180 B.C. are fitted with hearths and cupboards, bedsteads and doors that could be bolted shut.
Today, in forays to remote spits of land, people are working to save some of these places for posterity from the climate changes accelerated by human activity.

Lynn Jenkins owned the Kansas 2nd congressional district after taking it fro a Democrat in 2008

But she's not running for re-election in 2018, and the GOP candidate  has been uncloaked as a charlatan.

GOP candidate Watkins told voters he owned a company he built from scratch. He didn’t.  (Kansas City Star, 9/26/2018)
It's bullshit. “I got out of the military, started a small business and grew it from three people to 470 people. So I know what it’s like to have to sweat it and work to make payroll, to not take any salary so you can make ends meet,” the Kansas Republican told a Miami County GOP 2nd District Candidate Forum in March.

And Watkins achieved nowhere near a majority of the vote.

Not exactly Trump's America.  Hardly an improvement on Romney's percentage of vote.
Trump received 55.8% of the vote in 2016 compared to 55.4% for Romney in 2012 and 52.4% for McCain in 2008.

Clinton received 37.4% of the vote in 2016 compared to 42.2% for Obama in 2012 and 45.3% for Obama in 2008.

But let's say he did.  Looks like there's not much room for anything else.

Brett Kavanaugh's 1982 calendar being used as evidence against sexual assault allegations.  (USA Today, 9/26/2018)
5 pages?  Why not the entire calendar?  Lawyers for Kavanaugh sent five pages from the calendar to the Senate Judiciary Committee late Tuesday, notifying them they intended to use the pages to prove Kavanaugh wasn't at a 1982 house party where Christine Blasey Ford alleges Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, groped her, tried to remove her clothes and put his hand over her mouth.

Definitely a MAGA group of white guys!

Opinion.  Man Up, Grassley. Question Blasey Ford Yourself.  (The New York Times, 9/24/2018)
Let’s start with the cynicism. Mr. Grassley said, “We reserve the option to have female staff attorneys, who are sensitive to the particulars of Dr. Blasey’s allegations and are experienced investigators, question both witnesses.” The chairman knows the optics are bad for him. Mr. Grassley and his 10 Republican colleagues on the judiciary committee are all white men. Their median age is about 60; Mr. Grassley and his colleague Orrin Hatch of Utah are in their mid-80s

Iowa's Last Lynching:The Charles City Mob of 1907and Iowa Progressivism.  (State Historical Society of Iowa, Fall 1994)
Charles City is the county seat of Floyd County. ON JANUARY 9, 1907, a mob of several hundred men, some masked with handkerchiefs and others undisguised, rammed down the doors of the Floyd Gounty Jail in Gharles Gity, Iowa, with a rail iron. Sheriff William Schermerhom and several deputies offered only feeble resistance as the mob seized one of the prisoners, James GuUen. A wealthy, white, sixty-two-yearold contractor, GuUen had murdered his wife and stepson the previous day.
