Trump's America: Wisconsin's 6th Congressional District

Forget Senate negotiators — House conservatives could have the last word on immigration.  (Washington Post, 1/26/2018)
Immigration policy, Grothman told the Theresa crowd, “should be determined by us picking them, not people sneaking across the border, and as soon as more Democrats recognize this, I think we will be able to pass a DACA bill.” According to estimates from the University of Southern California’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration, Grothman’s district is home to roughly 600 DACA recipients and an additional 900 who could be eligible for protections — putting it in the bottom third of all House districts nationwide and slightly under the median for Republican-held districts.

Wisconsin cities with highest unemployment rates could use some of that Chicago millennials Foxconn love that Scott Walker is dishing out

Unemployment statistics found at Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development

How Wisconsin can help its own unemployed workers get jobs at Foxconn.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 1/26/2018)
Shouldn’t the money Wisconsin citizens pay in taxes be used to help Wisconsin residents get jobs rather than to lure workers from other states?
That’s a question I found myself asking after reading that the Walker administration wants to spend $6.8 million to lure people from Minneapolis, Detroit and Chicago to work at the new multi-billion-dollar Foxconn complex and other jobs.
What if we found ways to help Foxconn hire the unemployed and underemployed from Racine and Milwaukee?

Based on the people seen in photos posted at Scott Walker's Twitter feed, none of these percentages are within his comfort zone.

CES 2018: Hip airbag for seniors leaves knees and elbows unprotected in a fall

Here’s the Coolest Health-Tech Gadgets for 2018.  (Healthline, 1/26/2018)
As CNET reports, Hip’Air is the invention of a French company called Helite, which was already making similar airbags for horse riders and skiers. The company says its device can reduce 90 percent of the impact from a fall. They hope it can drastically reduce the number of hip injuries in the elderly.

Not to mention your wallet.

As c|net also reports, the cost is $750, which doesn't include a $50 expenditure to replace the gas inflator after each fall.

Trump's America: Green Lake County, Wisconsin

Why Is Pay Lagging? Maybe Too Many Mergers in the Heartland.  (The New York Times, 1/25/2018)
The phenomenon appears to hit workers hardest outside major cities — areas where voters’ economic frustrations helped carry Donald J. Trump to the White House in 2016. Mr. Trump won Mr. Gies’s county by nearly 40 points.

Pew Research: How Americans view trends changing the workplace

Americans see both good and bad in trends that are changing the workplace.  (Pew Research Center, 1/23/2018)
Among whites, those without a college degree are far more likely than those with more education to say that increased outsourcing of jobs to other countries (39% vs. 24%) and a rise in imports (30% vs. 13%) have hurt their job or career. When it comes to the impact of immigration, 42% of whites with no college experience say it has hurt them personally;

The popularity of Joyce as a baby name is graphed here.  Let's take a look at Heather.

Initially looking as though she had no gas in her tank, Heather accelerated into the fast lane during the 1970s and 80s, spending 21 years (1970-1990) in the top 20, peaking at #3 in 1975.

By the time this movie was released (1989), Heathers had flooded into the high schools of America.

U.S. Road Safety Laws Lag, While Fatalities Climb.  (City Lab, 1/22/2018)
In the 2018 report card of state traffic laws, the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety finds that only six states are “significantly advanced” towards adopting 16 laws they deem “essential to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce health care and other costs.”
For example: Roughly half of all vehicle occupants killed in crashes over the past five years weren’t wearing seat belts. Yet 16 states still lack primary enforcement seat belt laws for everyone on board.
