So far this year, there have been more than 27,800 shootings that have taken the lives of more than 6,800 people and injured an additional 13,500. To say that the United States lags behind other peer nations on this measure is a gross understatement. The gun fatality rate in the U.S. is 25 times higher than other high-income nations. For young victims ages 15 to 24, the rate is 49 times higher. Women in this country are 11 times more likely to be killed with a gun than their international peers.

Still trying to get a grip on 'untenable'

Definition:  Merriam-Webster

Every time I encounter the adjective untenable, I have to puzzle out its meaning.  Once I look up the definition, which I usually have to do, it apparently evaporates within the hour.

"Not able to be defended."

How hard can these 5 words be to retain?  Maybe I could do so if I incorporated 'untenable' into my vocabulary.  Actually, here I am approaching my 68th birthday, and I don't think I've ever used it in conversation.  'Indefensible', yes.  All the time.

'Untenable' is simply one of those words that always slips through my grip.

UPDATE. Scott Walker: Our sloganeering governor is at it again.

(highlights added)

Here we are, 6 years, 4 months, and a handful of days into the Scott Walker era, and all he can do is point to his recall election victory as his historic accomplishment.

"Yea, me!" cheers Scottie, as he gears up for a third term.

Although his approval rating has improved since his sub-40% performance from August 2015 to August 2016, he's still underwater, i.e., more respondents disapprove.

Part 3 starts here.

Remember then?
Not just any jobs.  Private sector jobs.  Walker said he would declare an economic emergency on his first day in office and call a special session of the Legislature to address his economic plan.He pledged to bring 250,000 jobs to the state by the end of his first term and cut an array of taxes, starting with those on multi-state corporations and businesses with 50 or fewer employees.

Even now, it doesn't add up to 250,000.

The reality
Job creation slowed sharply in Wisconsin in 2016, raising questions and worries. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 6/2/2017)
Doesn't sound like third-term credentials to me.  Wages and employment fell sharply in 2016 in Wisconsin’s manufacturing sector, the biggest piston in the state’s economy, in a year that also saw the state’s weakest overall job performance since the 2008-'09 recession. The anemic jobs figures surprised economists at a time when the national economy evidently remains in expansion mode, and even have some beginning to wonder if a recession might be on the horizon.

Democratic districts in U.S. House targeted by GOP: California 36th

On November 2, 2010, California voters approved Proposition 20, creating a Citizens Redistricting Commission.  It's why we've seen more competitive races in this state since then.

As a result of redistricting, Mary Bono Mack -- yes, Sonny's widow -- was the incumbent in the 2012 36CD election.  She lost to her Democratic challenger, Raul Ruiz, by 5.8 percentage points.  Ruiz has since increased his margins of victory considerably, most recently defeating Republican Jeff Stone.

Clinton won the district with 52.3% of the vote compared to Trump's 43.4%.
