Wrigley's Doublemint Gum: 100 Years of Chewing Its Trade Secret*

Doublemint
  • 1914.  The 3rd brand to be introduced by Wrigley (Spearmint and Juicy Fruit being the other 2)
  • 1939.  The Doublemint Twins make their first appearance -- on the radio, on billboards, and in magazine ads
  • 1960. The Doublemint Twins appear in their 1st TV commercial.

According to Euromonitor International
  • Young consumers have an increased apathy towards chewing gum
  • New methods of packaging and promotion haven't reversed this trend.
  • Wrigley has a 53% market share.

*The actual flavorings used in Doublemint gum are a trade secret, but the company does say that the main flavor ingredient is peppermint. Although it is not a sugarless gum, Wrigley's replaced some of the sugar with aspartame and acesulfame potassium, both artificial sweeteners, in 2003.  (Wikipedia)
