Battle of the Branch Libraries

In this corner....

And in this corner....

Battle of the library closing begins.  Task force's suggestion to spare 3 branches in low-cinome areas is drawing criticism.   (Charlotte Observer, 3/5/2011)

Excerpt:   The two represent different ends of an emerging tug of war over potential branch closings within Charlotte-Mecklenburg's struggling library system.

It will play out in an atmosphere already charged by cuts to schools and parks that spurred angry protests along racial, economic and residential lines.

At one end of the library debate are popular suburban branches such as the one in Matthews, where Hedrick enjoys reading magazines by the fireplace.

At the other are some less-used urban counterparts, such as the West Boulevard branch, where Watson relies on the computers to look for jobs.

Matthews, with nearly 665,000 transactions in fiscal year 2010, is on the list of potential closings released last week by the citizen-led Future of the Library Task Force.

West Boulevard, with about 118,000 transactions over that period, is not on that list because it's in a low-income neighborhood
